On February 8, Amy Jung and her son Ethan visited the Door County Humane Society animal shelter. They had no plans to adopt a pet that day. But both of them were drawn to a large, orange-and-white tabby cat weighing about 12 pounds. His name was Pudding.

Pudding wasn’t loud or attention-seeking—he simply lay there, calm and quiet, with eyes that held something... familiar.
Amy didn’t know why, but she felt an instant connection.
Moments later, they decided to adopt him.

From the moment he entered their home, Pudding acted as though he had lived there all his life. That night, after the visit to the shelter, Amy and Ethan went to bed early.

Around 9 p.m., just as Amy lay down, she suddenly experienced a severe diabetic seizure.
She blacked out—unable to call for help, unable to move.
The house fell silent.

Except for one living being still awake.
Pudding.

He jumped onto Amy’s chest, trying to wake her.
When she didn’t respond, he used his paws to tap her face, then gently bit her nose—just enough to jolt her back to consciousness.

Amy stirred but couldn’t speak loudly. She tried calling Ethan, but her voice was too weak.

Pudding understood.

He ran upstairs, opened Ethan’s door, jumped onto the bed, and cried out until the boy woke up. When Ethan saw the urgency in the cat’s behavior, he followed him—and discovered his mother unconscious.

He called for help just in time.
Amy was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed: had it been a few minutes later, she might not have survived.

The next day, Amy visited her doctor and shared the story.
He said he had seen animals react to health issues before—but never a cat act so clearly, instinctively, and effectively to save a life.

Amy recovered.
As for Pudding? He was perfectly healthy, though his blood sugar was found to be slightly low.

Carrie Counihan, director of the shelter where Pudding had lived, shared more of his story:
He was born in 2003, briefly adopted by an elderly woman, and returned after she passed away. Despite living in the shelter for years, Pudding was quiet, gentle, and never caused trouble.

Now, he had finally found a home—and perhaps, a purpose.

“I truly believe he came to me for a reason,” Amy said.
“If I hadn’t brought Pudding home that day, I might not be here to tell this story.”
